Bitmap Graphic Formats

  • GIF - Graphics Image Format - licensed under patent for many years, now off patent and available for open source project, good for images with low numbers of color, like logos.
  • PNG - Portable Network Graphics - open format, similar to GIF, also good for images with low numbers of color, like logos. Can also save files as 24 bit with alpha transparency - good for textual overlays.
  • JPEG - open format, yet a company claimed patent rights and was paid millions of dollars by Sony for its use in digital cameras. A lossy compression format good for photography.
  • PNG plus - an extension of PNG that can store text in layers.
