Google Pagerank is the algorithm which decides in what order search results should be returned to the user. There are many factors which are fed into the algorithm, but I've heard that much of it involves link-based authority, meaning the number of links that point to a certain URL, the more authoritative it is (as well as how authoritative the inbound links are).
