The part I really enjoyed about setting these up was learning about perl. Perl is a mysterious language to me, but I like it more and more everyday. I believe planet uses python, and I like python a lot too. Python feels complicated and complex. PHP? I find it convenient.
This was actually the third time I’ve setup a planet aggregation service. The first couple of times was just to experiment, and this time I found it much easier to follow the Debian guidelines - big surprise huh? 
I also really like the fact that the data is statically rendered. That’s a great way to serve content on the web.
