jQuery jEdit...Connection

September 25th, 2009

I have used jEdit before.  For those unfamiliar with jEdit it is a a text editor for programmers, available under the GNU General Public License version 2.0.  It's a good way of editing programs, web pages, etc.  The j in jEdit stands for java.  Java is a programming language that derives much of its syntax from C and C++ but has a simpler object model.

I've been talking to my cousin trying to learn about new software so I can help him out more with the work we're are doing and he mentioned that I may want to get familiar with jQuery.  Now I was unsure what jQuery was but like I said I have used jEdit and I thought maybe there was a connection there. Well the j in jQuery stands for Javascript, at this point I thought my assumption was correct but the name is actually quite misleading.  Although they both have the java name in common and they're both programming languages they are really very different and quite unrelated.

But anyways for those of you still wondering what jQuery is I'll fill you in.  jQuery is lightweight JavaScript library that emphasizes interaction between JavaScript and HTML.  So it is basically a reference guide that gives you templates of sorts with pre written JavaScript.
